WATERS OF THE WORLD

When I was a little kid, maybe nine years old, I loved to look at the maps in a large atlas that we had. My biggest question was...was the water in the Black Sea really black? How about the Red Sea? I remember thinking that it would be cool to have a collection of 'Waters of the World'....test tubes with water from the Suez Canal, Loch Ness, the 'Seven Seas'. But I was nine and pretty much put the idea on the 'back burner' until...Fifty-seven years later I happen to be living in Redondo Beach, California. I'm listening to the radio when the Beach Boys' "Surfin' USA" comes on. It's a great song that I grew up with and had probably heard a million times , but this time, when the lyrics went..."San Onofre and Sunset, Redondo Beach LA..." Well, I live in Redondo Beach so, I just smiled..... And started to build my collection

SURFIN' USA

First was a series of three boards, about 39" long containing tubes for waters from all the surf sites mentioned in the song. At first I set out to fill the tubes, and still will for one of the boards, but I soon realized that the 'fun' of this project would be for the final owner to fill them themselves.

After "SURFIN' USA" I decided to build smaller, individual boards, each with a tube for water from a famous surfing beach around the world.
